Sessions

Elevating and Celebrating Effective Teachers and Teachings seeks to help our professionals learn the tools they will need to lead from the classroom, not leave their classrooms.  To this end there are both break out sessions and plenary sessions designed teach ways to maximize classroom instruction and leadership opprotunities.

Colleague Circles

Strategic problem solving groups. You will be placed with others from your region and grade level and with a leader at your table you will share strategies and stories and create a plan to boost morale and increase teacher leadership at your schools.

Plenary Sessions

There will be a whole group session centered around helping participants build a roadmap for what teacher leadership will look like at their sites with Rob Kriete and Julie Hiltz, Teacher Leaders at Eisenhower Middle School and Lutz Elementary School.

​Breakout Sessions

Everyone will cycle through the four breakout sessions which hgihlight four areas of potential impact, reflection, the PLC, the community, and the school house.  Each session has a page with session materials.

Online Continuing Support

Join the First Class conference area for additional information and colleague support.  Find Wiki's on our topics, discussion threads on teacher leadership, and space to continue your colleague cirlce conversations.  To join, email ecet2@sdhc.k12.fl.us and ask.  Use the session webpages and their integrated twitter feed to get help from acorss the county!

Throughout the day you will hear from Irvin Scott, Deputy Director of Education for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Cassandra Mattison, Hillsborough County Teacher of the Year, 2013,  Michelle Miller, Teacher Leader, Brandon High School, Dorina Sackman, 2014 Florida Teacher of the Year, and MaryEllen Elia, Superintendent of Hillsborough County Public Schools.

Speakers

Michelle Miller

Brandon High School

Michelle Miller is an ESE teacher at Brandon High School. She graduated from Armwood High School, The University of Florida, and The University of South Florida, earning her M.Ed in Educational Leadership. Miller works in a co-teach model to provide services to students with disabilities in a general education  and resource setting.  She coordinates the school's High School/High Tech program, allowing ESE students on a standard diploma post secondary opportunities, and is Department Head for the ESE program, serves as the school's Graduation Coordinator, and CTA Representative. She is dedicated to helping each student develop a goal and dream for his/her future, regardless of circumstances. â€‹

Greta Wooley

Essrig Elementary School

Greta Woolley is a first grade teacher working in a full inclusion classroom at Essrig Elementary School.  She graduated from the University of Florida earning a Masters Degree in Education with an emphasis in special education.  For the past 25 years she has served in leadership roles both inside and outside of the classroom that include being a team leader, an ESE Specialist, and owning her own educational consulting business.  She has won numerous awards for her teaching, but currently finds no greater passion than seeking opportunities to elevate and celebrate the work of her colleagues through movements like ECET2.    

Dorina Sackman

2014 Florida Teacher of the Year

Dorina Sackman has been teaching non-native English speaking students for the past 14 years. She treats her classroom as a stage for children to celebrate their diverse backgrounds while still learning English. Her proficiency in five languages helps her to communicate with parents to help facilitate involvement in their child's education.  She faces the constant struggle of introducing students to concepts that are not only new, but in a different language. Miss Sackman has used the Common Core Standards to add depth to her lesson plans and allows her students to use a higher level of thinking and to communicate better to grasp concepts and apply classroom learning to the outside world.  Dorina fiirmly believes in, "It takes a village to raise a child." and added "It takes a village to raise a child's achievement." 

MaryEllen Elia

Superintendent, HCPS

MaryEllen Elia began as a social studies teacher in New York.  She has served as a reading resource specialist, the district’s first magnet schools supervisor, general director of secondary education, and chief facilities officer.   Her honors include the College Board’s Outstanding Leadership award and Florida’s 2007 Superintendent of the Year.  Elia holds a bachelor’s degree from Daeman College; a master’s in education from the University of Buffalo; and a Master of professional studies in reading from State University of New York at Buffalo.  She is currently serving studnets as the Superintendent of Hillsborough County Public Schools.

Julie Hiltz

Lutz Elementary School

Julie Hiltz graduated from the University of South Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications/Public Relations in 1998. She earned a Master of Arts in Library/Information Science from USF in 2002. After graduation, Hiltz was hired as the Oak Park Elementary Media Specialist. She transferred to Lutz Elementary in 2003. She serves as the Chair for the Lutz Elementary School Advisory Committee and is a member of the Lutz Problem Solving Leadership Team. Hiltz is a member of the American Library Association, the Florida Association for Media in Education and the Hillsborough Association of School Library Media Specialists, for which she has served as a board member. She is working this year in a hybrid role as a Teacherpreneur with the Center for Teaching Quality. In that role, she teaches in the morning and has release time to learn and lead in the afternoon.

Rob Kriete

Eisenhower Middle School

Rob Kriete is a middle school language arts teacher at Eisenhower Middle School and teacherpreneur in his 20th year in education.  Kriete graduated from the University of South Florida in 1994 and earned his M.Ed in Educational Leadership in 1998.  As a teacherpreneur, he devotes his mornings to his middle school students and works afternoons on advocating for teacher leadership across the state.  He is currently working on a communication project around the Common Core to help parents, teachers, and educational stakeholders better understand why the standards are changing and how this will affect students.  Kriete is a strong proponent of effective PLC's, truly believing that collaboration is key to fundamental educational change. He has worked with professional development to create and give trainings to Hillsborough County Teachers.
